Clothes play a critical part in the conclusions we reach by providing clues to who people

are, who they are not, and who they would like to be. They tell us a good deal about the wearer's background, personality, status, mood and social outlook.

Since clothes are such an important source of social information, we can use them to manipulate people's impression of us. Our appearance assumes particular significance in the initial phases of interaction that is likely to occur. A young adult who is dressed in an unconventional manner, regardless of the person's education, background, or interests, may alienate an elderly middle-class man or woman.

People tend to agree on what certain types of clothes mean. Adolescent girls can easily agree on the lifestyles of girls who wear certain outfits, including the number of boyfriends they likely have had and whether they smoke or drink. Newscasters, or the announcers who read the news on TV, are considered to be more convincing, honest, and competent when they are dressed conservatively. And college students who view themselves as taking an active role in their interpersonal relationships say they are concerned about the costumes they must wear to play these roles successfully. Moreover, many of us can relate instances in which the clothing we wore changed the way we felt about ourselves and how we acted. Perhaps you have used clothing to gain confidence when you anticipated a stressful situation, such as a job interview, or a court appearance.

In the workplace, men have long had well-defined precedents and role models for achieving success. It has been otherwise for women. A good many women in the business world are uncertain about the appropriate mixture of "masculine" and "feminine" attributes they should convey by their professional clothing. The variety of clothing alternatives to women has also been greater than that available for men. Male administrators tend to judge women more favorably for managerial positions when the women display less "feminine" appearance: shorter hair, moderate use of make-up, and plain tailored clothing. As one male administrator confessed," An attractive woman is definitely going to get longer interview, but she won't get a job."

According to the passage, the way we dress ______.

A.provides clues for people who are critical of us

B.indicates our likes and dislikes in choosing a career

C.has a direct influence on the way people regard us

D.is of particular importance when we get on in age

听力原文:W: I haven't seen Mike for years. How is he getting along?

M:I came across him in the street only yesterday and he told me that he was having trouble with his new business.

W: He has set up another business? I knew nothing about it.

M: He managed a shop last year selling sport clothes but it soon went bankrupt. So he changed his mind.

W: What is he doing now?

M: He is managing a bar. And this is also in a pretty bad stale.

W: Sorry to hear that, but that should be what he's good at.

M: Yes. But he was fined and threatened to close the bar.

W: What went wrong?

M: He's only licensed to sell beer, but he sold hard drinks.

W: He should have minded his steps. But that shouldn't be the reason for...

M: Well... He has had several other setbacks, too.

W: Misfortunes never come alone. What setbacks?

M: The people around him did not support him. Some even tried to play down him.

W: They are jealous, aren't they?

M: Worse than that. Some people even tried to encourage him against his wife, because she wants him to give up the business.

W: I can't believe that.

M: And Mike was in a ruined mood.

W: Let's go and have a good talk with Mike's wife. We need to persuade her to support him.

M: You've taken the words put of my mouth.

Nature has supplied every animal except man with some covering for his body such as fu
r,feathers, hair, seals, shells or a thick hide. But man has nothing but a thin skin.If someone were to ask us,“Why did human beings start to cover their bodies with clothes?” most of us would answer,“To keep themselves warm,of course.” It is only when we begin to think about it a little that we realize that clothes are worn for a great many reasons that have nothing to do with our need for warmth at all.For instance,we wear clothes to some extent in order to decorate ourselves – to make ourselves,if possible, look more graceful or dignified (高贵的) than we are.Clothes of a special kind are often worn to show that the wearer has authorityor power. The individual wearing them is trerated with respect because he occupies a certain office. The judge in the court, for instance, might look a very ordinary and unimpressive figure without his wig (假发) and gown.Clothes are an essential part of all ceremonial occasions, whether it is connected with religion, the law, parliament, royalty, the fighting forces,or the state.Sometimes, even in civilized countries, people wear some article of clothing,or some jewel,to decorate ourselves,to show our position in the world, for ceremonial purposes, for “luck”,to give ourselves dignity and authority – have anything to do with our need for warmth and protection from the weather.
